Homeopathy during pregnancy labour and postpartum

Homeopathic medicines have been safely used during pregnancy and labour for over 200 years. In stark contrast to pharmaceutical drugs, they gently stimulate the body’s innate healing mechanisms, and pose no risk to mother or child.
Many women are naturally wary of pharmaceutical drugs during pregnancy and rightly so. The public history of thalidomide and congenital birth defects, and the not so public minor birth defects associated with drugs such as Prozac, are enough to raise red flags. Additionally, a number of drugs have not been through adequate testing during pregnancy, and many are known to travel across the placenta, and also to transfer into breast milk.

Conversely, homeopathic medicines, which are energetic in nature, are considered safe for both mother and child. Homeopathic remedies are made from just about any substance in nature that one can conceive of, and diluted to the point where virtually no active ingredient remains. Prescribed according to a set of healing laws, each prescription is unique and tailored to the individual; ten women with morning sickness for example, may each receive a different remedy, depending on an evaluation of the whole person, or totality of symptoms.
There are homeopathic remedies available to treat the whole gamut of conditions associated with pregnancy, birth and post-birth; everything from morning sickness, breast tenderness, constipation, heartburn and urinary problems, to labour and post-partum complications or problems.

The benefits of homeopathic remedies are not limited to treating problems however, many women use them throughout their pregnancy for prevention; most common is the use of Arnica in the final weeks of pregnancy to help prevent post-labour bruising and soreness, and elicit a quicker and more complete healing process. Throw in some Hypericum after the birth if you’ve had stitches, and let your body work its healing mojo. Beyond the physical benefits, homeopathy offers women some much needed emotional support.
Consulting an accredited homeopath upon testing positive for pregnancy is one of the best things one can do to holistically support oneself during pregnancy. If a woman can align herself energetically with homeopathic treatment - integrating mind, body and emotions at the start, she will strengthen her constitution and proceed from a place of balance and mental/emotional health. It will also help to prevent the onset of common conditions associated with pregnancy, or reduce their severity, reduce the risk of birth complications, and ensure a smoother, more enjoyable pregnancy experience from start to finish.

The bottom line is homeopathy offers a gentle, safe non-pharmalogical method of treatment for all aspects of pregnancy, birth and post-partum, and the more you can limit your reliance on pharmaceutical drugs the better for you and the baby.
