2014 was a huge year for me and I’d like to take a chance to reflect on everything that happened.
We saw in the New Year in Ballarat as part of a MASSIVE road trip with the kids. We headed off from Cairns a bit before Christmas and drove down to Melbourne, via the Snowy Mountains, which was awesome. We stopped and visited friends and family along the way – but a week’s road trip with a 6 month old and a 2 year old is a little tiring. We had Christmas in Melbourne and then new years in Ballarat, where we also celebrated my grandparent’s 60th wedding anniversary. Then we made the trek home.
Except that we didn’t actually have a home to come home to. Having only relocated to Cairns a few weeks before we went on our holiday we had been living at my sister’s house. It’s a lovely house, but a tad small for 3 adults and 2 toddlers. We ended up relocating into my parent’s house, which was occupied by my other sister, but it was a little bigger. My partner and I slept on an air mattress in the lounge room for a few weeks. It was not terribly fun and it was not “just like camping”.
When we finally found a place to call home it even had a garden! YAY!!
We looked for a nice place in our dream area, but gave up after a while. Things were getting desperate and we were willing to take what we could get. Once we let the universe know that we would stay at the bottom of the mountains we found an awesome house that was nearby my parents and sisters. Huge house, big study, great yard and a vegie patch for me to play in.
For my birthday in April we got a cyclone. My first chance to have a birthday party, all my own, with my family in quite some time and it gets crashed by Cyclone Ita. Oh well…better luck next year! I drank plenty of wine to console myself.
During all the holidaying, moving house, settling in and cyclones of the first half of the year I continued my hypnobirthing a doula studies. My partner looked for work. I took the kids to playgroups. I made friends. I got involved in the local birth community. And we went to trivia each week. I was very glad to get the kiddies into daycare as I was slowly going completely mad!
We made good use of our year pass to the local zoo.
I was looking forward to the second half of the year, with the kids in daycare one day a week, things would get a little less crazy. Instead I got stuck into my blog writing, finished my hypnobirthing assignments and pracs, started a birthing after caesarean support group with a colleague, signed a doula client and started going to personal training sessions with a friend. In between all that we found time to make use of our year pass to the local zoo quite often as well as acquire a year pass to some other local attractions. We also took the kids (by now aged 1 and almost 3) to Townsville for camping and football. And because I missed out on a birthday party for me I planned awesome parties for my kiddies. My partner also got a job and then changed jobs.
I was exceptionally happy that for the first time in about 5 years we didn’t have to travel interstate for Christmas!!
Opening our Christmas presents after only a 5 minute drive was nice!
We saw a lot of change and learning in 2014 – moving house, starting my business, my partner changing jobs, adjusting to life with 2 toddlers, starting a blog and running a maternity care revolution. It was an amazing year, but I am so looking forward to 2015 – the year of growth.
In 2014 we also learned how to deal with chickenpox in a toddler.
Want to know what the Sprout household has planned for 2015 – part 2 coming soon!
